Our History

La Vieille Europe was founded at its current location on Boulevard Saint-Laurent in 1959 under the name of Old Europe Meat Market. While during the early years this institution had a butcher’s vocation, it was quite another when José Castanheira took over the business in 1972 and decided to turn it into a delicatessen to meet the needs of the citizens of the neighborhood. However, it was at the dawn of the 80s that La Vieille Europe became the one we know today following a fire, that allowed Mr. Castanheira to expand the retail space.

The grocery store was later taken over by the Patriarchs Dos Santos and Da Silva, two men from the neighborhood who had the sustainability and success of this grocery store at their heart. They made sure that La Vieille Europe met the specific needs of their regular customers by acquiring the greatest variety of fine products possible. Their mission was also to become a highly specialized institution thanks to the strong links they had with their customers and their employees.

After more than 35 years of dedication to La Vieille Europe, the two patriarchs have thought of their respective sons to continue the mission of this grocery store, then already well established in the district. Although in 1999, Steve Da Silva and Nelson dos Santos were not destined to succeed their father, the two men were honored to take the reins of La Vieille Europe and contribute to the development of this institution that saw them grow. Therefore, it was with Paulo Raimundo, a dedicated employee, that they became the three new owners of La Vieille Europe.

The outgoing leaders supported the three buyers for a year to ensure the best transition. It was also an opportunity to put them in contact with regular customers who were particularly loyal to the business

Since then, the three young owners Paulo Raimundo, Nelson dos Santos and Steve De Silva are pursuing the mission of La Vieille Europe and contributing to making it this European market where you can find everything.
